How to play
Goal of the game
Two sides fight in the mist on a 7 by 7 board. Each hides four pieces from the opponent: one secret Queen and three Lanterns. Capture the enemy Queen before yours falls.
Setup
- Secretly place your four pieces in your half of the board (the three rows closest to you). Tap a square to put the selected piece there, drag a piece to move it, or use "Random" to place everything in one go.
- The Queen wears a crown. Your opponent never knows which of your four pieces it is.
How a turn works
On your turn, you do just one thing.
- Move one of your pieces by at most two orthogonal steps: an adjacent square (diagonals included) or two squares in a straight line. Pieces may jump over others, but cannot stop on a piece of your own side.
- Capture: entering a square occupied by an enemy piece captures it. It is removed from the game and revealed (Queen or Lantern). Your piece stays on the square, and your opponent then knows where it is.
- Probe any square you like: your opponent answers only with the number of its pieces in the eight squares around it (the probed square itself does not count). The probe and its answer are known to both players.
The mist
- You only see what is near your pieces: the mist lifts under each piece and on the eight squares around it.
- An enemy piece inside that zone shows up as a shadow. You also see when an enemy piece enters or leaves it, without knowing whether it is the Queen.
- Sight is mutual: if an enemy piece is right next to yours, it sees you too, and it can capture you in turn. Walking up blindly is dangerous.
- Moves outside your zone stay invisible: you only know that your opponent moved a piece.
End of the game
Capturing the enemy Queen wins. If nobody manages it before the chosen length runs out (40 turns each at normal length), the mist closes in: the side that kept the most pieces wins, and a tie is a draw. At the end, both boards are revealed and the game is replayed in fast-forward.
Levels
From Beginner, who moves almost at random, to Master, who tracks every possible layout of your pieces, picks the most informative probes and bluffs by moving its Queen. The AI never cheats: it only knows its own pieces, the probes and what its own mist shows it.
Two players on the same device
A hand-over screen hides the board between turns. When the device changes hands, the new player taps "I am ready" to see the mist of their side, then what their opponent did.
Online
The host acts as the referee: each player only receives their own positions, the answers to probes and what their mist shows them. There is no clock: a pause never costs a turn.
Controls
- Tap one of your pieces, then a destination square (it is shown as a preview), then tap it again or press "Confirm".
- "Probe": tap the square to probe, then confirm.
- Keyboard: arrows move the cursor, Enter taps, S probes, D moves, Esc cancels.
AI levels
- BeginnerThe AI probes and moves almost at random, and does not always take advantage of a visible piece.
- AmateurThe AI protects its Queen, captures what it sees and follows the trail left by a positive probe.
- IntermediateThe AI tracks your pieces with a probability model, but still makes many mistakes.
- ExpertThe AI weighs the risk of every square, picks probes that teach it a lot and strikes at the right moment.
- MasterThe AI considers thousands of possible layouts of your pieces, avoids giving itself away and bluffs by moving its Queen.
