Patchwork Quilt

Sew the scraps together: at every seam, the patterns must meet.

How to play

Goal

A patchwork quilt is waiting for its last scraps of fabric. Fill the whole blanket with the scraps laid out beside it (one to five squares each). Every fabric square carries patterns that touch its edges: ribbons, flowers, diamonds and stripes in six colours. At every seam, the two halves must meet exactly: same colour and same shape. An edge without a pattern must touch an edge without a pattern. The border of the quilt sets its own patterns.

How to play

  • Drag a scrap onto the blanket: it snaps to the grid. If a seam does not match, the scrap is refused and the faulty seam flashes red.
  • Tap a scrap to turn it a quarter turn (also the mouse wheel or the R key).
  • In the advanced albums, flip the scrap like a pancake: long press, right click, the Flip button or the F key.
  • A scrap already sewn can be taken back: drag it elsewhere, or tap it to put it aside.
  • Hint: the first request shows a scrap and its place; the second sews it for you. If a misplaced scrap blocks the way, the hint shows which one.
  • Undo takes back the last move.
  • On the keyboard: Tab to pick a scrap, arrows to move it, R to turn, F to flip, Enter to sew, H for a hint, U to undo, L for the albums.

Stars

  • One star for a finished quilt, a second with no hint, a third when you beat the reference time shown.

Modes

  • Solo: the campaign of five albums of eight quilts (40 quilts), free play at five difficulties, endlessly, and the quilt of the day, the same for everyone (harder at the weekend).
  • Against the AI: a race against an AI seamstress who sews her own copy before your eyes. Five levels, from the hesitant apprentice to the master seamstress.
  • Two players: face to face on the same device, each with a copy of the same quilt, split screen. The first finished blanket wins.
  • Online: a race on the same quilt, the fastest wins.

Albums

  • Baby Blanket (4 × 4): the first seams, then turning.
  • Cabin (5 × 5): small scraps and a unique solution.
  • Grandma (6 × 6): similar patterns and twin scraps.
  • Festival (7 × 7): flipping scraps.
  • Heirloom (8 × 8): open squares (their edges have no pattern) and pinned scraps, already sewn.

Finish six quilts of an album to open the next one.

Tip: start with the corners and the border, where the patterns are set. A one-square scrap goes last: it fills the holes. The pale pattern halves on the empty blanket show what the neighbouring square requires.

About the quilts

Each quilt is cut into scraps at random, then an exact solver (depth-first search on the first empty square, with every orientation) checks that it can be completed, and that it has only one solution at the advanced levels. The AI seamstress uses the same solver on her own copy, without ever looking at the generator’s solution.

Album

  1. Baby BlanketA 4 × 4 blanket in soft scraps: learn to match the patterns, then to turn the scraps.
  2. CabinA 5 × 5 blanket in plaid flannel: more scraps, small pieces and a single right answer.
  3. GrandmaA 6 × 6 blanket in floral cotton: look-alike patterns and twin scraps.
  4. FestivalA 7 × 7 blanket in velvet: scraps arrive upside down, so you must flip them too.
  5. HeirloomAn 8 × 8 blanket with open squares and scraps pinned in advance: the masterpiece.
